How HPtuners Credits and Licensing Works

What Are HPtuners Credits?

Credits are the currency used to license your vehicle to your MPVI3 device.

Think of credits as a license to open and allow editing of your PCM / ECU for your device.  Once licensed to your device ( MPVI ) you can tune and adjust your vehicle an unlimited amount of times.  If you wish to tune other vehicles you will need to purchase the required credits to license the new vehicle.  Once again the license allows unlimited access to tuning the vehicle.  Licenses are tied directly to your MPVI device for life.  If another MPVI tries to tune the vehicle it will require licenses to access and edit the tune files.

This credit-based licensing system offers a solution, enabling enthusiasts and professional tuners around the world to tune as many supported vehicles as they want, all while using just one device.

The best part of universal credits are that they are "universal" meaning they can be used on any vehicle supported by HPtuners. Licensing and credits cost vary depending on the vehicle you are tuning, but if you purchase 10 credits and only license 4 to a vehicle, the 6 other credits can be applied to any other vehicle that is supported.

If you still have the original first generation device (MPVI), there are specific credits required. Unlike universal credits, these are Ford, Dodge, and GM specific credits. They are similar to universal credits on the licensing and tuning side, however the original and first MPVI module limits tuning capabilities to only Ford, Dodge, and GM vehicles.

Why Do You Need a License?

The credit-based licensing system allows you to tune your vehicle's control module, including ECMs, PCMs, TCMs, and more. Licensing quantities vary depending on the vehicle’s year, make, model, engine, and control module.

However, licensing a vehicle is not required until you are ready to write or create a calibration to your vehicle’s control module. You can still use the VCM Scanner to log data and view diagnostics without a license.

Licenses are linked to your vehicle's VIN, PCM serial number, and PCM OS, so as long as they remain unchanged, you can read, write, and edit calibrations to that vehicle indefinitely. You can create and upload as many custom tunes as you like, such as max towing, fuel economy, track day tunes, and more without the additional costs each time.  In the case of a new PCM the vehicle will likely need to be relicensed as the OS system identification will be changed.

If you sell your car 10 years from now, you don't need to sell your device along with it. You can retain the device and the license for that vehicle as you'll still be able to use the same device to tune many more supported vehicle.

**Note: Once licenses are chosen and committed, they are permanently stored and cannot be erased or swapped onto different vehicles.**

What Are The Advantages of Credit Based Systems?

The credit based licensing system provides a convenient solution for the modern tuning industry, whether you’re managing a local shop, overseeing a large operation, or working solo in your garage. The biggest advantage of this system is the ability to tune all supported vehicles in your shop or garage using just one MPVI3 interface.

For professionals, this means you can service any HPtuners supported vehicle that comes through your door, whether it's cars, trucks, powersports vehicles, or even Sea-Doo personal watercraft, you can tune it with only one interface.

Cost Effective:

This brings us to the next major advantage, cost efficiency. With the ability to tune multiple vehicles using a single device and credits, you only need to buy credits when you need them, leading us into the next advantage. Plus, you can maintain a credit reserve, allowing you to quickly start tuning as soon as a new platform is supported.

Not Vehicle Specific:

Universal Credits are not tied to specific vehicles, meaning they can be used for any HP Tuners-supported vehicle. There's no need to specify details like year, make, model, or license type at checkout. Just choose the number of credits you need, complete your purchase, and you're ready to go!

How To Load Credits Onto Your Device

After you purchase credits, activating them is a very simple process and can be done almost instantly. It's easy as opening the latest version of VCM Scanner or Editor on your computer (make sure you have stable internet). Locate and click "Help" on the menu bar, ten simply press "RESYNC INTERFACE".

If you are having trouble re-syncing or activating your device. Please submit a ticket to HPtuners support team or you can go to the VCM Suite help site.
